Planning Social Media Content for 2022

Planning social media content for 2022 doesn’t have to be stressful, or even all that time-consuming!

The new year is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start planning social media content for 2022! A lot has changed in the social media landscape this past year, so we know it might feel overwhelming thinking about doing all of the things on all of the platforms. That’s why we wrote this article – to help make everything as easy as possible for you with the same tips and tricks we use as a marketing agency!

Start with choosing a sustainable posting frequency

What feels realistic for you? It’s easy to be ambitious as you enter the new year by setting a goal of posting every single day on every single platform, but it’s important to be respectful of your own time and busy seasons.

When choosing your posting frequency, consider how long it takes you to create your content. Make sure you can carve out an appropriate amount of time every single week (or month) to create and schedule your content.

Try this – choose a MINIMUM posting frequency, maybe two or three times per week. Then if you have additional time you are able to commit to content creation, there’s nothing stopping you from posting more than your minimum on any given week!

Write out a list content ideas and topics

There are a few categories that we typically recommend for this. First, is content that directly provides value to your target market. Our favorite ways to do this are to search for keywords on websites like Reddit, Quora, and Google Keyword Planner to see what types of questions people are asking. These questions are coming directly from your ideal customers themselves, so you can feel confident that this content will be valuable to them. (If you are planning an upcoming launch, tie this type of information to the topic of the launch beginning at least 30 days in advance.)

Second, consider a “lighter” category of content. This might be something like inspirational quotes or messages, entertaining videos or memes related to your industry, or fun and engaging content that doesn’t really require much thought and isn’t explicitly promotional in nature. This type of content helps to build connection, relatability and engagement.

Third, you’ll want content that relates back to you! This might be sharing articles that you’ve been featured in, client or customer spotlights, or behind-the-scenes of your business and team! This helps to build trust and share the people behind the business.

Bonus – Create story highlights with information on your products or services so that it’s easy for those who check out your profile to quickly learn how they can work with or buy from you!

Use your content topics and fill in a calendar!

Based on your posting frequency, open your calendar and in Google Sheets or Airtable create a column of all of the dates you plan to post for the upcoming week, month, quarter, etc. (we usually do this by the month).

In the next column, start filling in content topics! It’s good to mix up your categories on any given week (ie sharing an inspirational piece of content on Mondays, a value-added piece of content on Wednesdays, and a behind-the-scenes post on Fridays.

Pro tip – Create an extra column to add comments on analytics from your content to track your best-performing content!

Once you have this filled in, you have a content plan and can start creating!
